MANY LIBERAL USA DEMOCRATS HAD FELT
FOR YEARS THAT CHINA AND THE UNITED STATES WERE HEADING TOWARD WAR. For years USA politicians had done all they
could to appease China with good trade deals and by allowing China to steal USA
jobs and technology. President Trump cut into this cycle of war. Source @ http://boomerspeaks.com/273893/885749.html .
The reason for fearing
was sometimes described as the Thucydides’s Trap, a deadly pattern of
structural stress that results when a rising power (China) challenges an
existing one (USA). This phenomenon is as old as history itself. It was
described by the historian Thucydides. The Peloponnesian War that devastated
ancient Greece, Thucydides explained: “was the rise of Athens and the fear that
this instilled in Sparta that made war inevitable.”
Over the past 500 years, these conditions of conflict between a new power and
an older one, have occurred sixteen times. War broke out in twelve of them. Prior
to President Trump, an unstoppable China approached an immovable America while
both Xi Jinping and Donald Trump promised to make their countries “great again.”
This seventeenth case looked grim until President Trump got China to begin scaling
back its and accept becoming number two in the Pacific a trade conflict and
begin to end cyberattacks and hostilities at sea that could soon escalate into
all-out war.
In Destined for War,
the eminent Harvard scholar Graham Allison explains why Thucydides’s Trap is
the best lens for understanding U.S.-China relations in the twenty-first
century. Through uncanny historical parallels and war scenarios, he shows how
close we are to the unthinkable. Yet, stressing that war is not inevitable
(with President Trump leading the nation), Allison also reveals how clashing
powers have kept the peace in the past — and what painful steps the United
States and China must take to avoid disaster today.
